The barn door has to be one of the most popular design trends in the last decade, and for good reason. In comparison with your common hinged door and pocket door, the barn door can be a dynamic, accessible value add to most homes. We particularly like the country or farmhouse vibe that it brings, hearkening back to the days of agriculture as a center-point to daily life.

We recently had a client reach out to us for the best way to incorporate a new barn door into their basement that would be appealing to potential visitors of their AirBNB space. Upon consultation we found an already inviting space that would benefit from transforming an unused area into an additional room, where we can install a barn door. The net result allowing for additional visitors for our client.
AirBNB has gained traction as a viable cashflow vehicle for homeowners with additional areas to rent out for individuals, families, and friends seeking an alternative to hotels and your traditional bed & breakfast. Offering space in a major city like Atlanta where people visit from around the country & the world for various events & experiences presents a good investment opportunity for homeowners comfortable with accommodating visitors.
Our client’s aim is in direct alignment with Oilwheel’s credo – striking oil & flowing (that is, realize opportunities and draw continual value from them). It was, therefore, a great honor to help our client renovate their basement by converting unused space into an additional room with a new barn door. What follows is insight into the process from beginning to end.
The Process
For this project, we drew out plan for space and gathered lumber, drywall, moulding, paint, and a barn door kit, then got to work…

The client decided that they wanted to have the room in alignment with a column conveniently inline with one of the basements walls. We first had to identify ceiling joists and stud location to ensure there’d be support for framing. Following, we cut the already-installed baseboard and crown moulding to allow space for the new walls to be installed, then dry-fitted the bottom plates based on measured space.

Next, we went ahead and framed out the two walls, ensuring squareness with current walls and that the top & bottom plates were plumb. For this project, we used construction screws to fasten studs to top and bottom plates as well as to secure to ceiling joists. Additionally, we had to move the light switch over from the path of the new wall.

We then proceeded to frame-out the header and door frame custom to allow for best fit for the barn door. Once complete, we cut out bottom plate for doorway.

After framing, we installed and finished drywall with mud to give that nice seamless finish we all love and expect.

Nearly complete, we went ahead and cut & installed moulding for baseboards, crown, and door frame, then painted walls and moulding. Adding in a treadmill should make this listing more appealing.

Finally, we mounted the track for the barn door for best fit to meet door dimensions & added some art. The client should do well on their listing.
